*Link to Anonymous SGP Anti-Harassment Form
Social Good Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to create and establish positive influences for individuals, communities, and the environment. Social Good Place is a community space and charity incubation hub. Social Good Place serves as a collaborative workspace for community members seeking to create and grow nonprofits and social initiatives. We invite members and partners of SGP to help us create a safer space and positive experiences for everyone.
PURPOSE
SGP is committed to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, caste, social status, religious affiliation or marital or parental status. We do not tolerate harassment in any form. Any individual associated with SGP violating these rules may face consequences including, but not limited to warnings, mediation, suspension or expulsion.
By accessing SGP in any and all capacities, you are agreeing to abide by these guidelines. We expect our community to help us realize a safe and positive experience for everyone.
WHAT CONSTITUTES HARASSMENT
Harassment includes, but is not limited to:
- Verbal comments that reinforce discrimination based on genders, gender identities and expressions, sexual orientations, abilities, physical appearances, body sizes, races, ages, socioeconomic statuses, social status, religious affiliations or marital/parental statuses.
- Sexually-charged jokes, statements, or comments.
- Creation or display of sexual images in public spaces.
- Prejudicial surveillance, deliberate intimidation, stalking, or unwanted following.
- Harassing photography or video/audio recording.
- Sustained disruption of the coworking space or other events.
- Inappropriate physical contact.
- Invasion of personal space.
- Unwelcome sexual attention.
- Psychological harassment.
- Power harassment or bullying.
- Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.
These behaviors, as well as others described below, are not conducive to a welcoming environment and are therefore prohibited in all spaces (physical and virtual) that are encompassed in this agreement.
INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE
As language is both a reflection of, and a contributor towards, culture, we ask that all participants use language that demonstrates the best aspects of coworking culture and avoid language that could alienate or disparage others. This means that all members of our community need to follow these guidelines for what constitutes disrespectful language.
Any words or phrases, no matter how seemingly innocuous, that perpetuate negative stereotypes and communicate exclusion are not allowed. Some of these can be subtle and said without ill-will, which is why we encourage participants to examine their own language and use this guide as an opportunity for learning. For some examples of language that we are trying to avoid, please see the below examples.
RACISM
Racism is deeply rooted across societies globally, exists among all social classes, and is connected to a long history of violence, oppression, and domination. Addressing individuals or a group of people in a diminutive, derogative, or malicious way based on their (assumed) race and ethnic background is racist, disrespectful, and harmful. We do not tolerate any racist behavior, slurs, statements, or jokes.
ABLEISM
Words like “crazy,” “dumb,” “insane,” or “lame” are examples of language that devalues people who have physical or mental disabilities. Many people use these words not because they seek to be hurtful, but because they are attempting to describe something they perceive to be outside of the norm, which reinforces harmful stereotypes and impacts real people. Instead, try to broaden your vocabulary and find ways to express yourself that are more appropriate and inclusive.
SEXISM
We strongly advise avoiding gendered pronouns as well as gendered terms. Everyone is expected to respect each other’s chosen pronouns. When using pronouns it is always better to ask than assume. Try to avoid using words like “dude” or “guys” to address groups. This shorthand contributes to linguistic barriers that drive exclusion and an unwelcoming environment.
Not all interactions are necessarily linked to a physical space. Regardless of the mode of interaction, all other guidelines apply here, and extend to unwelcome or deliberately ill-intentioned activity directed at individuals via social networks, forums or other online platforms linked to their participation in online or physical spaces.
Check out one of our copies of Conscious Style Guide for more information regarding inclusive language. It should be in the Flex Room.
ENFORCEMENT
If an individual or group engages in harassing behavior, SGP retains the right to take action in order to maintain a welcoming environment for other participants. This includes discussions, warnings, mediation or expulsion, or other measures deemed appropriate. Our team is authorized to address anything designed to, or with the clear impact of, making the environment hostile for any participants. We expect participants to follow these rules in all spaces (physical and virtual) including social activities, and we encourage participants to follow these guidelines outside of these spaces as well.
REPORTING
If someone violates this policy or makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, we encourage you to discuss your options around reporting as soon as possible to SGP.
You can share your experience either personally or anonymously, both detailed below.
ANONYMOUS REPORT
Anonymous reports of harassment can be made HERE. We commit to fully investigating and acting on information we receive through anonymous reporting. You have the option to provide contact information if you would like any follow up on how the incident was dealt with, or if SGP needs more information to handle your report.
PERSONAL REPORT
Personal reports can be made by:
- Setting up a time to meet with SGP to share the incident verbally; or
- Emailing us at hello@socialgoodplace.org; or
- Requesting contact information for a third-party reporting agency.
When taking a personal report, SGP, or an external third party will make sure that your report is discussed privately and securely. This can be a difficult process and you are welcome to bring someone with you for support. We will not ask you to confront someone, and we will not relay your name or information to the accused. We will ask you to go over the details of the harassment, including:
- Date of Report or Incident
- Estimated Time of Incident
- Type of Complaint or Harassment *Optional
- Incident Description
- Location of Incident
- Identity of Individual involved (name; physical description) *Optional
- Were there any witnesses? *If yes and you would like us to follow up with them please state here *Optional
- How has this incident impacted you? *Optional
- What resolution are you hoping for? *Optional
- Contact Information *Optional- if you would like follow up or support
Any form of retaliation against anyone making a complaint or participating in an investigation is strictly prohibited and will result in disciplinary action. Everyone has the right at any time to raise the issue of harassment without fear of reprisal.
ACCOUNTABILITY AND RESOLUTION
SGP is authorized to address any violation of this Code of Conduct. We believe anyone who experiences harassment should have the choice to participate in and co-create an outcome that will allow for your healing and accountability for the person who harassed you. We also support the decision to not be involved in the resolution process. This means you will be able to share what your desired process is to resolve your harassment report and we will do our best to honor what will feel restorative for you. You will also be able to decide if you want your name shared with the person who harassed you.
Some of the options for resolving your harassment report include, but are not limited to:
- Dialogue between the person who harassed you and SGP to provide education around the harassing behavior
- Dialogue between the person who harassed you and SGP regarding the expectations for the behavior to cease or change with signed documentation
- Mediation between you and the person who harassed you facilitated by SGP or a third party reporting agency
- SGP will be responsible for agreed upon mediation expenses
- A formal verbal and/or written warning with pending termination if the behavior continues
- Immediate expulsion of person who harassed you
- Other measures deemed appropriate
There are, however, some situations where SGP may be required to immediately expel the person who harassed you for safety and liability reasons. For example, behaviors that could be prosecuted as a bias crime, criminal assault, or other crimes under Oregon law. SGP is not a mandatory reporter and we believe the individual harmed should have the agency to decide to report to law enforcement.
If you are accused of violating SGP’s Code of Conduct, we invite you to reflect on how your behavior may have unintended impacts regardless of the intent and learn from the experience. You may have an opportunity to apologize and we welcome you to have a conversation with SGP for support in making this an opportunity for accountability.
If you feel you have been falsely or unfairly accused of violating SGP’ Code of Conduct, you can share your thoughts by:
- Setting up a time to meet with SGP to share the incident verbally; or
- Emailing us at hello@socialgoodplace.org.
SGP will have the ultimate authority to resolve the harassment report.
SGP aims to respond to all reports within 3-5 business days.
Conflict of Interest: If a report involves an SGP staff member—whether as the person who caused harm, a witness, or someone otherwise directly involved in the incident—SGP will take steps to address any real or perceived conflict of interest in the handling of the report.
In such cases:
- The staff member in question will not be involved in any part of the review, decision-making, or resolution process related to the report.
- An alternate staff member, leadership representative, or an external third-party mediator or advisor will be assigned to ensure neutrality and fair process.
- If no appropriate SGP staff are available to serve in a neutral role, SGP will work with the reporting party to identify a qualified outside facilitator or conflict resolution partner to oversee the response.
Our commitment is to uphold the safety, dignity, and agency of all participants. We recognize that power dynamics and staff involvement can impact the comfort and fairness of reporting and resolution. If you have concerns about bias or neutrality, please let us know in your report so we can ensure an equitable process.
